Do you have any questions about Japanese law and/or judicial remedies? Perhaps you are generally curious to learn more about the adjudicative process in Japan? Please join our guest presenter Judge Shota Sakaguchi and attorney Joseph Morris of Roberts Perryman P.C., for a virtual presentation and general discussion of the Japanese Civil Litigation system. This presentation is intended to provide some basic insight into the Japanese legal system for foreign counsel and allow for a roundtable discussion and questions. Presentation topics will include: (1) Various Court Structures and Types of Courts in Japan; (2) Civil Litigation Process and Composition of Judicial Panels; (3) Aspects/Features of Civil Litigation in Japan (with Comparisons to the U.S.); (4) Alternative Dispute Resolution Options; and (5) Japanese Courts’ Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Judgments.
Judge Shota Sakaguchi is a Japanese jurist with extensive experience in both civil and criminal law. He earned his bachelor's degree in economics from Waseda University in 2018 and completed his legal training at the Legal Training and Research Institute after passing the Japanese bar exam in 2017. He began his judicial career at the Saitama District and Family Court, where he served from 2019 to 2022, handling civil and administrative matters. Since 2022, he has served at the Okinawa Branch of the Naha District and Family Court, presiding over civil, criminal, and juvenile delinquency cases. Judge Sakaguchi is currently a visiting scholar at Washington University in St. Louis, deepening his engagement with international legal perspectives.
Joseph Morris' practice at Roberts Perryman P.C. focuses on insurance coverage, insurance defense, and extra-contractual liability litigation. He also works with the firm's malpractice defense and appellate teams. Joseph has nearly a decade of experience in defending insurance companies, insureds, and analyzing complex insurance coverage questions, as well as experience pursuing claims of contribution on behalf of insurers.
Prior to joining Roberts Perryman, Joseph clerked for several years for the Honorable Lisa Van Amburg at the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District. He also has prior experience in areas of practice that include the representation of taxpayers, business organization and formations, and federal contracting.
