Roe Cassidy Coates & Price, P.A. is pleased to announce that founding member William A. Coates has been awarded the prestigious Robert W. Hemphill Award by the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys' Association (SCDTAA) for his many years of distinguished service to the legal profession, the defense bar, and the SCDTAA.
Named for the late United States District Judge Robert W. Hemphill, the award is not routinely given. Since its inception in 1988, the Hemphill has been awarded only 14 times. The recipient must be one who has shown distinguished and meritorious service to the legal profession and the public, as well as one who has been instrumental in developing, implementing, and caring for the objectives of the SCDTAA.
Mr. Coates has been a member of the South Carolina Bar for over 38 years. His practice includes commercial and corporate litigation, as well as criminal defense. In addition to his service as a DRI board member, he chaired the Judicial Qualifications Committee of the South Carolina Bar, and served as president of the SCDTAA. He is a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, and is a member of the Federation of Defense and Corporation Counsel, the American Board of Trial Advocates, the American and Greenville County Bar Associations, and has been included in South Carolina Super Lawyers since its inception.
Mr. Coates chaired the South Carolina State Ethics Commission from 1991 through 1993. He has served both as vice chair of public policy and general counsel for the Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce, as well as the boards of Easter Seals and the March of Dimes. In addition, he is a recipient of the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian award.
