New Greeting Methods

One thing many people agree on in regard to the Coronavirus is that our present means of greeting one another is not the most sanitary. Right now, a handshake or kiss on the cheek provides opportunity for the virus to spread and does not provide enough distance. The hunt is on for a new greeting that will be comfortable for all. Below are some suggestions that have been made for the future.
- Air kiss – This could be considered a bit dramatic by some.
- Bow – It is already a custom in various parts of the world. Perhaps a nod of the head could work as well.
- Fist bump – This is extremely popular among athletes, but it is possible that some may still feel uncomfortable touching someone else.
- Shaka – Hawaiian style with 3 middle fingers curled to palm, pinky and thumb up, shake hand.
- Namaste – Palms pressed together in front of your heart with a slight bow.
- Salute – palm down, elbow bent. This could be viewed as too militaristic or too formal.
- Hand over heart with a nod of the head (peace sign).
- Elbow bump – This form of greeting has become popular among politicians as of late.
- “Wuhan Shake” – A new greeting of tapping feet that has emerged from the desire to contain germs.
With all the social distancing advisement, we will have to make some adjustments to our previous customs. We want to express our friendship, thanks, and welcome to people but it will look different than it has in the past. What are your ideas for expressing these greetings while maintaining a little distance?
