Q & A with Martin George

Martin George is the is the main advocate and principal attorney of Martin George & Company, where he has more than 26 years of experience in the courts of Trinidad and Tobago in civil litigation, appellate, and constitutional matters. He has a deep and abiding love and passion for the twin-island nation of Trinidad and Tobago, and this is exhibited by a strong sense of social service by assisting a number of charitable organizations.

George served on the Prime Minister’s Constitutional Committee for Internal Self-Government for Tobago and also served for three years as a commissioner on the Law Reform Commission of Trinidad and Tobago. He is the founding chairman of Crimestoppers Trinidad and Tobago and is the legal representative of Crimestoppers International for the entire Caribbean region. He appears regularly on television and radio talk shows as a guest commentator on a range of topics, including socio-political, legal, and economic.

Q: Before becoming an attorney, what was your first job?

A: Accountant/Auditor Trainee.

Q: What motivated you to pursue a legal career?

A: Counting pigs.

Q: Who was your chief mentor and how did he or she influence your career?

A: I never had a mentor. It’s been all self-made.

Q: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

A: Never focus on money, focus on doing good legal work and money will always follow you.

Q: What is one thing you would like to learn to do?

A: Retire now, while keeping my legacy continuing.

Q: What is your proudest career achievement?

A: Building my law firm from the ground up and nurturing it into what it is.

Q: What other career path might you have chosen?

A: Dentistry.

Q: What is your most treasured material possession?

A: My home – it is my sanctuary and my happy place.

Q: What is your happiest childhood memory?

A: Driving around with my dad on weekends.

Q: What is your favorite movie and book?

A: Movie: “Chicago”

Q: What is the most awe-inspiring place you have visited?

A: Dubai.

Q: What are your favorite leisure time pursuits?

A: Travelling and vacationing.

Q: What is your favorite famous or inspirational quote?

A: Nobody must waste my time except me – and I don’t waste it.

Q: Who is on your guest list for the ideal dinner party?

A: Justin Bieber, Lewis Hamilton, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, LeBron James, Serena and Venus Williams, and Arianna Grande.

Q: What are the top three items on your bucket list?

A: To visit every country in the world, to have strong, competent successors for my law firm and who will preserve and grow and develop my legacy in that regard, and to have a son.
