We want you to win!

By Christian Stegmaier

We want you to win. That is the plain purpose of Primerus.

Four verbs stand behind it: Curate. Showcase. Educate. Connect. Hold us to all four.

This society wins when the alliance is robust, and its firms and its lawyers are actively engaged. You win as a member when you build deep relationships with lawyers in other Primerus firms, and those relationships pay dividends no one can itemize: work sent, work received, a second opinion at 10 at night, a client kept because someone three time zones away picked up, a lesson learned about effective firm management. The list goes on.

Curate

The value of your membership is not set by the size of our organization. It is set by who is in it. A referral is worth exactly what the firm receiving it is worth. If we admitted firms by counting, your membership would be worth less every year we grew. So, we do not count. We curate. Carefully.

And the profile we recruit against is not ours. It is yours. We look for firms that meet the needs of our members and clients.

Three tests.

Christian Stegmaier

The first is size. We look for firms comparable to your own: independent, boutique, built on the same economics. A referral between peers goes out and comes back. Between unequals it goes out and stays gone. Everyone here has built the same kind of firm. We want to do business with one another.

The second is practice. Complementary work, honestly assessed, so you can hand a matter to a firm with the capability to handle it and know the client is going to be well-served.

The third test decides the other two, and it is the hardest to apply. We are looking for firms that emulate our values and philosophies. The rankings will tell you that a firm is competent. Chambers, the Legal 500, Martindale-Hubbell – we rely on them, and they measure capability well. What they cannot measure is how a firm behaves on a tough day: whether the advice holds (or folds), whether difficult news travels early, whether the young lawyer gets taught or gets used. Peer selection against the Six Pillars – integrity, superior work product, reasonable fees, continuing legal education, civility, and community service – is how we find it out. The pillars are not a credential collected at admission; they are the foundation the profile is built upon.

Showcase

You practice in a sea of competitors, and no client can choose what they cannot distinguish. Our task is to demonstrate and promote the competitive advantage you hold as a Six Pillar firm – to make the standard legible to the people who buy legal services, so the discipline, capability, and responsiveness you maintain becomes a reason you are hired.

Educate

The law moves, and the delivery of legal services is moving faster than the law is. No firm should have to discover a shift in the market by losing a client to it. Our work is to put in front of you what is actually changing – in the substantive law, in technology, in how sophisticated buyers expect matters to be staffed, priced, and reported - early enough that you can act on it.

But competence is only the entry fee. The client rarely remembers the brief. They remember whether they were told the truth early, whether the invoice matched the conversation, and whether anyone called back the same day they called. That is a craft; it can be taught, and we intend to teach it. A firm that is merely excellent can be replaced by another excellent firm. A firm that is remarkable cannot.

Connect

You want to be affiliated with professionals who think and feel about the law the way you do. Primerus is the space for those lawyers to find one another: to connect, to collaborate, and to serve clients from coast to coast and continent to continent. A matter that opens in one country and closes in another should feel to the client as though a single firm did the work.

We will keep building this way – deliberately, at a steady pace on an upward growth trajectory, to a standard that is unlike any in the world. What we ask in return is simple: Get involved and stay involved. Not the managing partner alone – every lawyer in the firm. The associate in their second year who is still finding their way, the emerging partner wanting to build their own book of business, the practice head with 30 years in and a question they wants answered straight. There is something here for each of them.

Steady, intentional engagement makes a sharper professional and a less isolated one, and in my experience a better person. The returns run past the ledger. This is the essence of winning.

We want you to win. Know that. Primerus is built for you to make that happen.
