William K. (“Bill”) VanCanagan is a Shareholder with extensive experience advising clients on complex legal matters involving estate and succession planning, business organizations, and real estate and land use law. With a career spanning decades, Bill provides strategic, tax-informed counsel to individuals, families, and businesses across Montana and beyond.

Bill’s practice encompasses comprehensive estate and succession planning, including the design and implementation of sophisticated succession and exit plans, trust and estate planning, and long-term wealth transfer strategies. He works closely with clients and their advisors to address federal and state estate, gift, and income tax considerations, ensuring that each plan is tailored to meet both personal and business objectives. Bill is also a certified Exit Planning Advisor having been certified by the Exit Planning Institute of Cleveland, Ohio.

In the area of business law, Bill advises clients on the formation, organization, and restructuring of business entities, including limited liability companies, corporations, and partnerships. He has significant experience in mergers and acquisitions, recapitalizations, venture capital financings, and securities compliance. Bill also counsels business owners on governance, operations, and long-term strategic planning.

Bill maintains a robust real estate and land use practice, representing developers, landowners, and homeowners’ associations in a wide range of matters, including subdivision development, zoning, and regulatory approvals. He regularly appears before local government bodies on land use issues and provides guidance on complex real estate transactions, financing structures, conservation easements, and tax-deferred exchanges.

Bill earned his B.A. in Economics from Stanford University and his J.D. from the University of Montana School of Law. He also holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Federal Taxation from Boston University. He is admitted to practice before the Montana Supreme Court, the United States Tax Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the United States Court of Federal Claims, and the United States District Court.

He is a member of the Montana State Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
