Gregory T. St. Ours

Greg St. Ours is a member of the Virginia, West Virginia and District of Columbia Bars.  Greg concentrates his practice in civil litigation.

Most of Greg’s litigation practice is in defense of commercial claims, a considerable portion of which is insurance-retained defense, in the fields of employment, construction, lender liability, antitrust and trade regulation, business torts, defamation, professional malpractice and errors and omissions (design professionals, contractors, attorneys, surveyors, officers and directors, and fiduciaries).

Greg also works with clients on the transaction side including advice and consultation on commercial transactions, contracts, small or family owned business governance, insurance coverage, health care, employment, construction, commercial real estate and development, land use and zoning, eminent domain, finance and acquisitions, franchising and licensing, risk management, and copyright and trademark.

Upon graduation from the University of Virginia School of Law in May 1983 until December 1985, Greg practiced at a large firm in Washington, D.C. (principally antitrust litigation). Greg joined Wharton, Aldhizer & Weaver as a litigation and health care associate that December, 1985, and has served the firm as a partner since January 1989.

Greg has practiced before federal and state Courts in Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia and argued appeals before the Supreme Court of Virginia and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Greg has served on professional boards and sections of the Virginia Bar Association and the Virginia State Bar, including a three-year term on the VBA Board of Governors, terms as Vice Chair and Chair of the governing bodies of the VSB antitrust and VBA health law sections, a term as liaison to the VBA real estate section, a term as Secretary, Vice Chair and Chair of the VSB construction law section, and term as a member of the VSB Professionalism Faculty for new Virginia attorneys.  Greg is also a long-standing member of the VSB Professionalism Faculty for law school first year students.

During the six years between college and law school, Greg and his wife Debbie had their first three kids.  During these same six years, Greg worked: in administration and sales for what was then called the Norfolk and Western Railway in Roanoke, Virginia, and Chicago, Illinois; in residential construction as the General Manager of a company that developed subdivisions and built custom and spec homes in Charlottesville, Virginia; and in commercial construction as a Sales Engineer in the mid-Atlantic region.  Following Greg’s graduation from law school and entry into the practice of law, Greg and Debbie had five more kids for a total of eight children.

Greg holds a Virginia Class A Contractors License, No. 2705 095593A.  In addition to the construction experience noted above, Greg worked summers through high school and year-round during college as a laborer, framer and lead man.  All told, Greg has some seven years of experience in residential and commercial construction.  Greg brings this experience to bear in advising and defending contractors, engineers, architects, surveyors, developers and lenders.
