Julie-Karel (JK) Elkin is an experienced trial lawyer who has worked with some of the nation’s largest insurance companies, as well as independent businesses and personal claims. Focusing in negligence and regulatory claims, torts, contract disputes, mediation, and administrative processes, she is uniquely qualified to address all aspects of health data needs. She heads up Spicer Rudstrom’s Health Data practice in the Nashville office. A former CEO and general counsel of national dance clubs, JK has a keen understanding of a business’s need to secure sensitive information while also protecting itself in the event of a potential problem.

JK has the heart of a teacher when it comes to preparing a business and its employees for the task of securing sensitive materials, but as a self-described “crusader,” she also wants to protect people from being wronged. She strives to be someone her clients can entrust to fight their battles as well as to provide sound advice when they may not see the entire issue. The right thing to do, she believes, is to provide an honest, thoughtful assessment in all situations. She chose healthcare because she enjoys learning and digesting new information. As an area that affects many people, she wants to make sense of the constant changes that impact businesses and its employees—and help provide safeguards against any potential risks.

JK earned her J.D. degree from the Nashville School of Law, where she was a member of the Law Honor Council. She has provided her expertise for training sessions for paralegals and sales people; participated in a mentor training program with the Nashville Bar Association; and presented and provided materials for continuing legal education programs. She has been a Tennessee Rule 31 Listed Mediator and has received HIPAA certification training.

Following law school, JK practiced at Spicer Rudstrom and was named partner in 2001. She then went into private practice, where she represented all types of businesses and injury victims before being named as the chief executive officer and general counsel of ADS Brentwood. There, she provided strategic planning and daily operations for the multi-million dollar business for nearly seven years as it expanded rapidly under her guidance.

A trained ballroom dancer, JK performed in shows several times a year. She was a novice competitor as a child. When she is not pursuing the best course of action for her clients, she is involved with her three children’s school and extracurricular activities.
