In 2014, the United States Supreme Court appointed Greg Grimsal as Special Master to preside over a multi-state water rights dispute. Greg has been granted the authority to direct the legal proceedings of the dispute as he may deem it appropriate and necessary. The docket sheet that Greg is required to maintain for this matter may be found here.

Greg practices in the area of commercial litigation (for which he has been named a “Best Lawyer” since 2008), with some concentration in the areas of general contract disputes, commercial real estate, commercial leases, risk management and casualty matters (including coverage questions and lost policy issues), and complex products liability litigation. He has litigated maritime lien ranking disputes, oil and gas royalty suits and environmental cleanup cases, as well as several high-profile First Amendment cases. He has handled interdictions on behalf of a healthcare facility and also on behalf of the trust department of a financial institution. Greg has served as an expert witness in state and federal courts on the reasonableness of attorney fee claims.

In 2010, Greg was appointed by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights (USCCR) to a two-year term as chair of its Louisiana State Advisory Committee (SAC), whose charter is to gather information about issues within the SAC’s jurisdiction and report to the USCCR in Washington, D.C.

Greg has long been active in the New Orleans Chapter of the Federal Bar Association (FBA) having served as President from 2003-2004 and as a board member from 1998-2003. He also chaired the FBA’s National Membership Committee from 2001-2004.

In the community, Greg was a founding board member of Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans. He recently concluded nearly a decade of service on the Advisory Board of Christopher Homes, Inc., a housing program for low-income senior citizens conducted by the Archdiocese of New Orleans.

Greg received his J.D. from Tulane and served as Articles Editor of the Tulane Law Review. He won a Rotary Foundation Graduate Fellowship for International Understanding to Cambridge University where he obtained an LL.B. in 1981. After attending Cambridge, Greg was a law clerk for the Honorable Edward J. Boyle, Sr., of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
