YLS Member Spotlight: Jennifer Tichelaar
This fall, the YLS Newsletter Committee spotlights Jennifer M. Tichelaar, an attorney with The Gallagher Law Firm, PLC, in Lansing, Michigan. Jennifer is a graduate of Thomas M. Cooley Law School. Jennifer practice areas include real property, business, banking, title insurance, litigation, and banking and creditors’ rights. An interview with Jennifer follows:
1. What lessons have you learned as a young lawyer that you would like to share?
- Treat every client as if they are your only client
- Never be afraid to ask for help
- Always stay on top of your deadlines
- Keep your arguments simple and straightforward
- Learn to prioritize
- Words to live by, “On a Scale of 1 to 10, how important is it?”
- It’s important to take some time off and enjoy life!
2. If you could take two paid weeks off of work, where would you go or what would you do?
This is a tough one. I’m typically drawn towards the beach. However, I think that if I had a full two weeks off, I’d head to Europe! I was fortunate to be able to study in Bordeaux France while in undergrad and was able to travel quite a bit. I’ve been waiting for the opportunity to explore some of the countries I was not able to make it to and to re-visit my favorites.
3. Who do you most admire, famous or not, and why?
My parents and my husband. They have always been my support system and I could not have made it this far without their encouragement and support!
4. What, or who, inspired you to go to law school?
My Grandfather. He was intelligent, well grounded, and respected in his community as an individual and a professional. Unfortunately he passed away before I made my decision to go to law school. However, his legal career and outlook on life was my driving force throughout law school and still today, in my career.
5. When you’re not working, what do you like to do for fun?
Travel, read, watch college sports, and outdoor activities.
6. Most interesting non legal job?
I am a spinning instructor at the local YMCA’s in Lansing. This helps not only to keep me in shape, but also keeps me sane after a stressful day!
7. What is your greatest source of professional pride?
My greatest source of professional pride comes from the sincere emails and cards received from clients have their case has been resolved. It is a great accomplishment knowing that my clients sincerely appreciate the hard work spent on their case.
