YLS Member Spotlight: Jennifer M. Frankola

This summer, the YLS Newsletter Committee spotlights Jennifer M. Frankola, an attorney with Lewis Johs Avallone Aviles, LLP, in New York, NY. A graduate of City University of New York School of Law, Jen practices as a litigation attorney with an emphasis on special education, disability, and child and family advocacy. An interview to introduce you to Jen follows:

1.    What is your background?

a.    I’m proudly first generation American.  Both my parents were farmers.  My mother is Irish and my father is Croatian.  Neither of them went to college.  They came to America in the late 1950’s/early 1960’s for a new life and to live out their dreams.  I’m happy they took such a risk.
b.    I have two incredible sisters who are a decade older than me. They are my teachers and friends.
c.    Before law, I was a teacher in a Bronx middle school.  It was not an easy work place and my students proved to be challenging in their own ways, but it is one of my most favorite work experiences.  It helped me understand the complexities of the classroom. It also helped me understand and prepare for the work I am currently doing.

2.    What, or who, inspired you to go to law school? What inspires you in general?

a.    See #1

3.    If you hadn’t become a lawyer what would you have been?

a.    I would have continued teaching.
b.    In some ways, I still am.

4.    What was the worst/best professional advice you ever received?

a.    Best and worst advice:  Fake it ‘til you make it.
b.    I’ve turned this into:  Always be prepared.
c.    Sometimes it’s okay to show that you may not know the answer.  After all, we’re human. Be as prepared as you can be.  If you need time, ask for it.  But don’t take advantage of it. Get the task done. Time is a valuable resource for all involved, most importantly, for your client.

5.    When you’re not working, what do you like to do for fun?

a.    Travel.
b.    Read about traveling.
c.    Write about traveling.

6.    Legal “dream job” in law school? Legal “dream job” now that you’ve been practicing?

a.    I’m doing it!

7.    Do you have any hidden talents/hobbies?

a.    When I hear jigs and reels, I can’t help but Irish Step dance.
b.    Before law school, I used to be a competitive Irish Step dancer.
c.    I really love longboard surfing and try to find time to do it.
d.    Hiking.
e.    Photography and watching movies.

8.    Do you have a mentor?  If yes, what has he or she done to help in your development as a practicing attorney?

a.    Absolutely.
b.    Eileen H. Libutti
c.    She is the managing partner of the New York City office and my partner in the Special Education practice group.  She brings 17 years of trial experience to the table.  She’s a mother of twins, one of which receives related services.
d.    We learn from each other.  I teach her all about the world of special education and advocacy.   She teaches me all about the world of trial work and the “business of law.”  It’s a great combination and I learn so much from her each day.
e.    Eileen also teaches me how to value work-life balance.  In this line of work, it’s important to ensure that that you take care of yourself and spend time nurturing your family and friendships so that you can be the best professional for others who need your help.
f.    I’m still learning… : )

9.    What is your favorite television or radio program and why?

a.    Sunday Morning on CBS with Charles Osgood
b.    It really starts off my Sunday on such a positive note!
c.    The segments are really well written and produced, interesting, informative and fun!
d.    French press coffee, local bakery goods, and the show have started a new family tradition with me and my fiancé, Jared.

10.    What will you focus on in 2011?

a.    The continued development of the special education practice.
b.    Trying to catch some waves on my longboard before the NY waters get too cold!
