Washington DC Government Relations Lawyer
Stewart and Stewart
As a Washington, D.C.-based firm, Stewart and Stewart has the ability to help clients navigate the federal political and policy-making landscape.
Passionate debates about government policy are as old as the Republic. More and more, the competitiveness and vitality of domestic manufacturing, trade, agriculture, and healthcare are linked to issues such as upholding intellectual property rights, affordability, workforce and labor rights, and even global climate change. With globalization continuing to contribute to rapidly changing business models and practices, and with more and more countries competing for market share, companies, workers and non-profits today have a greater need for attentive representation in Washington.
The firm has a long tradition in shaping U.S. government domestic and international policies, dating back to the days when the firm’s founder, Eugene L Stewart, offered counsel to businesses during consideration of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. The current government affairs team has decades of experience in various levels of the federal government, including with the U.S Department of Commerce, the U.S. International Trade Commission, the offices of top Congressional leaders, as well as in associations and advocacy groups. The firm has been involved in nearly every major trade legislation on Capitol Hill since the 1960’s. In addition, over the past decade, the firm has represented clients with issues in agriculture and fishing; federal appropriations; intellectual property protection; and healthcare policy and regulation.
This diverse experience has given our team a strong policy and political knowledge base across a wide range of issues, as well as the ability to advocate before both the Executive and Legislative Branches of government. We also have significant experience with energy, domestic environmental, technology, and tax issues. In all areas, our goal is to achieve positive policy outcomes for our clients. We work proactively to accomplish our clients’ objectives by pursuing legislation and regulatory changes, and providing new policy options. We also work to modify, amend or block problematic congressional or executive initiatives.
Stewart and Stewart attorneys work closely with the government affairs team to monitor and identify legislation and regulatory matters where our clients have a stake. Our attorneys draft legislation sought by clients, then work to promote the passage of the legislation. Our experience and activities extend to working with coalitions, and marshalling public opinion by working closely with think tanks and the media.
At Stewart and Stewart, we understand that some provisions that policy makers consider minor can have real and major impacts on our clients. Some have unintended consequences. Faced with such circumstances, we provide clients with sound and timely advice meant to yield concrete results.
