February 14, 2018 – Portland, Maine – Peter Bennett of The Bennett Law Firm will be participating in the “Open Classroom” this Spring at Northeastern University. The “Classroom” is paired with courses for students both undergraduate and graduate, but the large sessions on Wednesday nights are open to the entire Boston Community and often draw people from a variety of backgrounds.
The topic this spring is The Rule of Law in an Age of Polarization and Rapid Change. It will explore the definition of the Rule of Law, what it requires, what happens in its absence, and how it has declined and emerged globally. It will also explore some of the tensions between the Rule of Law and Democratic Governance, focusing on the Rule of Law in time of polarization and technological upheaval, as in the United States, but also abroad.
Bennett, along with Judge Levin Campbell, United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, and Fernande Duffly, retired Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, will be speaking on February 14th from 6 to 8 pm on Core Features of the Rule of Law: Partisanship, Appointment of Judges, and Judicial Independence on the University Campus. The session will be moderated by Jeremy Paul, Dean of the Northeastern School of Law.
Peter Bennett is a nationally recognized expert and advocate on issues related to the independence of the judiciary. He is currently a member of the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary, and Treasurer of the National Judicial College in Reno, Nevada, the nation’s leading institution for judicial education. He is a past member and Chair of the Association’s Standing Committee on Judicial Independence and a past Chair of the ABA’s Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section. Over the years, he has been an advocate for bettering the judiciary. He was a leader when the American Bar Association’s House of Delegates adopted its policy on standards for judicial recusal, also known as when a judge must decline to hear a case, as well as in developing and adopting its policy on prevention of violence in the judicial system.
