At its annual meeting held in December in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, The American Board of Certification (ABC) unanimously elected Raleigh attorney Bettie Kelley Sousa as an Emeritus Director. Accredited by The American Bar Association, ABC administers the only nationwide certification of legal specialists in the fields of creditors’ rights, business bankruptcy, and consumer bankruptcy. A board-certified Creditors Rights Specialist since 1993, Ms. Sousa previously served as an ABC Director and held all office positions including President in 2011 and Chair in 2012.
With Smith Debnam since 1981, Ms. Sousa represents mostly businesses and business owners in a variety of matters, including contract drafting and disputes, business break-ups, and employment issues. Ms. Sousa is recognized as a North Carolina Super Lawyer® in Business Litigation and in 2011 was named a Woman Extraordinaire by Business Leader magazine. As an adjunct faculty member, she created and teaches a course in Business Litigation at Wake Forest University School of Law, her alma mater.
