3/19/2008 – Barnes Alford attorneys J. Todd Kincannon, R. Jeffords Barham, andMatthew G. Gerrald filed an amicus curiae brief with the United States Supreme Court in the case of District of Columbia v. Heller.

12/3/2007 – Barnes Alford associates J. Todd Kincannon and Matthew G. Gerrald were ceremonially administered the South Carolina Attorney’s Oath by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito, Jr. on December 3, 2007. The ceremony took place in the West Conference Room of the U.S. Supreme Court building.

Mr. Gerrald graduated magna cum laude from the University of South Carolina Honors College in 2003 with a B.A. degree, double majoring in political science and religious studies. In 2007, he earned his J.D. cum laude from the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he was the recipient of various honors and awards, including the CALI (American Jurisprudence) Award, and was a member of the South Carolina Law Review, the Order of the Wig and Robe, and the Order of the Coif. He also earned his Master’s in Public Administration from the University of South Carolina in 2007. He has been commissioned as a Blackstone Fellow by the Alliance Defense Fund and is a member of the South Carolina Bar, the Richland County Bar Association, and the Christian Legal Society.
Mr. Gerrald practices primarily in the fields of real estate, corporate law, contract law, construction law, insurance coverage, and church law. His real estate practice is focused primarily on commercial lending transactions and closings, while his corporate law practice involves researching and advising businesses on a variety of issues. He also regularly reviews and drafts contracts dealing with a wide array of subject matters, including liability releases and marketing agreements. In the field of construction law, Mr. Gerrald has assisted in dealing with cases involving procurement, bonding, and mechanic’s liens. He has also reviewed and drafted coverage opinions regarding insurance contracts and has assisted in cases involving allegations of bad faith. His church law practice includes guiding churches through the incorporation process, assessing the legal issues involved with church policy implementation, and researching general tort and contract liability issues.
Mr. Gerrald previously worked in the Washington office of then-Congressman (now Senator) Jim DeMint of South Carolina and for the North Carolina Family Policy Council in Raleigh. He is the author of “Strengthening Marriage,” published in 2005.
In addition to his practice, Mr. Gerrald enjoys spending time with his family and is an avid collegiate sports fan, particularly South Carolina football and baseball. He and his family are active members of Riverland Hills Baptist Church.
