Carrie is an experienced trial attorney, having tried dozens of cases to verdict throughout North Carolina. She focuses her practice now on the defense of catastrophic injury and death cases and particularly on the defense of professionals. In addition to defending cases of alleged malpractice against all types of health care providers, Carrie also has an active practice defending dentists, oral surgeons, physicians and nurses before their respective licensing boards. Carrie represents various local hospitals in civil litigation including professional and general liability matters and also advises them with respect to health law matters. She also has experience representing health care providers in administrative agency matters arising from Medicaid billing investigations.
Carrie also has a focus on the defense of premises liability matters, with a particular emphasis on cases arising from allegations of negligent security measures. She acts as outside counsel to several large self-insured corporations and advises them on these issues. Carrie has spoken on the topic of liability for the criminal acts of third parties, including speaking at the Primerus Defense Institute Convocation and at the Southeastern Claims Conference in 2011.
Carrie attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was accepted into the School of Journalism and Mass Communication as a freshman. She graduated with honors after only three years with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication in the public relations sequence. Carrie then attended law school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received her Juris Doctor degree. While in law school, Carrie was a member of the school’s Invitational Moot Court team which earned first place in a national moot court competition and was subsequently invited to appear on C-Span. Carrie received the James William Morrow, III award given annually to the most valuable member of the moot court bench and was also inducted into the National Order of Barristers.
After law school, Carrie joined a small defense firm in Greenville, North Carolina where she had extensive trial experience primarily in the areas of automobile and premises liability. In 2000, Carrie moved to Raleigh where she became a partner with the firm of Patterson, Dilthey, Clay & Bryson, LLP and continued to have an active civil trial practice. She joined the firm of Teague, Campbell, Dennis and Gorham as a partner at the end of 2007.
Carrie is a member of the North Carolina Association of Hospital Risk Managers, the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys, the Defense Research Institute, the North Carolina Bar Association and the Wake County Bar Association. She provides in-house education to clients on a variety of topics and also presents continuing legal education to other attorneys on the topics of trial preparation and strategy. She is the Vice Chair for the Premises Liability Practice Group of the Primerus Defense Institute. Carrie has also taught a substantive course on Tort Law with the Duke University Paralegal Certificate Program.
Carrie was selected by her peers to appear in the 2012 and 2013 editions of Best Lawyers in America and was selected for membership in the Claims & Litigation Management Alliance in 2013.
