Attorney Anka Hakert works in WINHELLER’s departments of Tax Law and Tax Advisory, the Law of Nonprofit Organizations and the Law of Private Foundations. Specifically, she counsels and represents nonprofit associations, nonprofit limited liability and other nonprofit organizations in all aspects of German nonprofit law. In doing so, she focuses on the value added tax consequences of individual activities of the nonprofit organizations.
In addition, Anka Hakert specializes in international tax law, focusing on German/US tax law issues. She gives legal advice to clients who are liable for taxes both in the US and in Germany and who are subject to the double tax treaties in effect between these two countries. In particular, she handles questions of estate tax and gift tax in cross-border cases.
Anka Hakert studied law at the University of Trier, Germany. During her mandatory practical legal training she gained international experience: she spent one term working for a law firm on the Seychelles. After completing her bar exam Anka Hakert began to work as an attorney. For several years she also worked full-time for a nonprofit organization in the field of insolvency law and, as deputy head, gained much experience in the day-to-day business of nonprofit organizations.
In addition to her legal practice she completed her postgraduate studies in tax law at the Westfaelische Wilhelms-University Muenster, Germany. She received her LL.M. degree as one of the ten best graduates in her year.
